This is the part of the job with no catalogue page and no model number. It gets measured on site, cut on site, and it fits the wall it was built for.

Part of a $75,000 whole-home renovation. The original was a 1980s oak wet bar tucked under the stairs with a laminate counter and a bar sink nobody used.

Ceilings and trim

The work you only notice when you look up.

Coffered ceilings are the hardest trim carpentry in a house. Everything is overhead, every miter is visible from every angle, and there is nowhere to hide a gap. They also photograph better than almost anything else, because a ceiling has no clutter on it.

Panel moulding, wainscot, crown, and picture rail follow the same rule. Consistent reveals, tight miters, and paint that does not telegraph the joints.

Do you design it, or do I need drawings?

Either. Most of this work starts with a photo the client found and a wall we have to make it fit. If a project needs real design, that runs $500 to $2,000 depending on scope, and most do not need it.

How much does custom carpentry cost?

It is quoted per project because a coffered ceiling and a set of floating shelves are not the same job. As a reference point, a whole-home renovation that included a custom wine cellar, two tiled fireplaces, and 600 square feet of great room tile came to $75,000 over two months.

Can you build something that does not exist yet?

That is most of this page. A gallery once asked for a front door that had never been built, as an art installation. It got built and it stood in the middle of the room all night.

Do you do built-ins around existing cabinetry?

Yes, and it is common. Removing dated cabinets and rebuilding the run with a proper pantry is one of the more satisfying jobs there is, and it usually costs less than a kitchen remodel.
